
Late Rally Comes Up Short at No. 18/19 Connecticut

Blue Demons make late run but fall, 75-68, on Saturday night
STORRS, Conn. – A late charge came up short as DePaul fell, 75-68, on Saturday evening at No. 18/19 Connecticut. Javon Freeman-Liberty led three players in double figures with 22 points while Brandon Johnson added 14 and David Jones finished with 13 points.
The Blue Demons trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half before a furious rally cut the deficit to just five points with 1:35 left in the game. Freeman-Liberty scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and moved to within 72-67 on his three-point play.
UConn's Adama Sanogo scored 12 of the Huskies' first 14 points, but DePaul (15-15, 6-14 BIG EAST) kept in the game with a three-pointer from the left wing by Philmon Grebrewhit making the score 18-16 midway through the half.
The home team stretched the lead out to double figures before a three-pointer by Jalen Terry and a baseline jumper off an inbounds play for Freeman-Liberty pulled the Blue Demons to within six points. Connecticut (22-8, 13-6 BIG EAST) answered with a three and then just beat the halftime buzzer and took a 40-29 lead at the break. with just over a minute until halftime.
Jones and Johnson hit three-pointers early in the second half to pull the Blue Demons to within seven at 44-37. UConn answered with seven straight points and held a double-digit lead for nearly 12 minutes until a three-pointer by Freeman-Liberty made the score 72-63 at the three-minute mark.
DePaul cut the deficit to five twice in the final 95 seconds, but a pair of UConn free throws finalized the score at 75-68 with 21 second left.
Jones added eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots while Freeman-Liberty grabbed three boards with three assists and Johnson secured five rebounds.
Sanogo led the Huskies with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
DePaul travels to New York for the BIG EAST Tournament starting Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. The Blue Demons are the No. 10 seed and face seventh-seeded St. John's at 7 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on FS1 and heard on WIND (560 AM).
