CHICAGO – With their newest team member six-year-old Danny Esposito and his family cheering on from the XS Tennis Village balcony, DePaul came through with a resounding 6-1 BIG EAST victory over Xavier in the regular-season finale on Senior Day Saturday.
DePaul improved to 5-0 in BIG EAST matches and 10-12 overall. Xavier fell to 3-2 in conference and 11-8 overall.
Coach Matt Brothers and the Blue Demons held a special letter-of-intent signing ceremony for Danny on Thursday evening welcoming the courageous and resilient youngster to the Blue Demon men's tennis program. His remarkable attitude and zest for life is helping him overcome cerebral palsy.
Danny and his family were connected to the men's tennis team through the Team Impact organization which matches children facing life-altering diagnosis with a college athletic program.
The Blue Demons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point.
Jona Gitschel and Leon Huck topped Brett Winters and Shashank Reddy 6-2 at the No. 2 position, but Xavier prevailed at No. 1.
It was up to Tripp Tuff and Marino Jakic to put one on the board, and they didn't disappoint with a 6-3 triumph over Charlie Temming and Marco Pennelli.
Matteo Iaquinto maintained the early momentum on the strength of a 6-3, 6-4 straight-setter against Pennelli at No. 5 singles.
At No. 6, Tripp Tuff followed Iaquinto's lead almost to the point with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Caden Kammerer, putting the "Band of Brothers" within a point of clinching the match.
Leave it to Luuk, as Wassennar slammed the door shut on any Musketeer comeback thoughts with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Temming for the clincher.
It was 5-0, good guys after Marino Jakic took down Winters 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Tonejc rounded out the Blue Demons' scoring with a 6-3, 6-7(9), 6-4 victory at No. 1 over Diego Nava.
