Blue Demons hit just .086 in 3-0 decision
DALLAS – In the final match of the weekend at the SMU DoubleTree Invitational, UC Irvine's physicality proved to be too much for DePaul in a 3-0 decision at Moody Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
Set scores of the match were: 22-25, 13-25, 18-25
Jill Pressly and Hanna Karl had seven kills apiece on the outside while collecting 10 and nine digs, respectively.
Bailey Nelson put down six kills on the right side while totaling a pair of blocks and a pair of digs.
DePaul (0-3) hit just .086 in the match while the Anteaters hit .321. UCI put up 14.5 team blocks to DePaul's seven while middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu tallied a match-high 17 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One: Consecutive kills from Pressly on the outside gave DePaul its first lead of the match at 9-8. Karl powered a ball through the UCI block for her fourth kill of the set to put DePaul in front 15-12. The Anteaters closed the gap on a 3-0 run to tie the score at 17. A Karl and Kindelberger block allowed the Blue Demons to reclaim the lead 20-19 before a three-point UCI spurt forced a DePaul timeout. A UCI service error kept the door open for the Blue Demons within one, but back-to-back Anteater kills would put the set away, 25-22.
Set Two: The Blue Demons dug themselves into a deficit early and couldn't recover as the Anteaters took the second set 25-13.
Set Three: DePaul jumped out to a 7-5 advantage in the third set, but a 5-0 UCI run on four Blue Demon errors would erase the advantage and force a Coach Zidek timeout trailing 10-7. DePaul would fend off a pair of match points on Pressly and Brooker kills but Ofoegbu's 17th kill of the match from the middle would claim the match for UCI.
UP NEXT: The Blue Demons will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Falcon Invitational presented by Hampton Inn Sept. 2-3. DePaul will face Western Kentucky, Northern Kentucky and Bowling Green over two days of action. Â
