DePaul Tops Eastern Michigan 3-1

Pressly and Underwood combine for 33 kills in four-set victory
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball opened day two of the DePaul Invitational with a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday morning. A combined 33 kills from Jill Pressly and Taylor Underwood lifted the Blue Demons over the Eagles to improve to 2-6 on the season and 2-0 at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Set scores of the match were: 25-15, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-15 .
Pressly led the Blue Demon attack with 19 kills at a blistering .545 clip while Underwood totaled 14 kills and hit .387.
Bailey Nelson added eight kills and five blocks on the right side. Setters Maggie Jones and Ashley Cudiamat tallied 26 and 16 assists, respectively.
Libero Rachel Krasowski picked up 22 digs while Aly Kindelberger added six blocks. Â
Eastern Michigan (0-9) was led by Sabrina Gremm's 12 kills .
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One: The Blue Demons ran out to a 12-7 lead after a Kindelberger and Karl roof on the right side. Pressly's third kill of the set extended the lead to six at 15-9 and forced an Eastern Michigan timeout. Nelson's transition kill on the right side widened the advantage to 22-14 before a Hanna Karl kill gave DePaul a 25-15 set victory. The Blue Demons hit .423 in the opening frame and totaled four blocks.
Set Two: Six attack errors in the first 15 swings saw DePaul trail 11-7 in the early stages of the second set. Pressly's kill from the back row maintained the four-point deficit before a four-point Eagles run widened the deficit to 19-11. The Blue Demons fended off a set point before EMU took the set 25-16 and evened the match at a set apiece.
Set Three: Early passing trouble allowed Eastern Michigan to take a 7-3 lead and force a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons rattled off a 10-2 run behind a five Underwood kills to take a 13-10 lead. Â A Krasowski service ace handed DePaul set point before an Eagles attack error sealed the set for the Blue Demons 25-18.
Set Four: A four-point spurt saw the Blue Demons take 14-10 advantage. The Eagles battled back to cut the lead to two before a Cudiamat service ace put DePaul in front 18-14. DePaul closed out the fourth set on a 7-0 run and claimed the match on a block by Kindelberger and Nelson.
Up Next: The Blue Demons will close out action at the DePaul Invitational on Saturday night with a match against Saint Louis at 7 p.m. DePaul will welcome back its alumni for a special recognition after the match.
