Blue Demons down Pirates behind big outings from Hernandez and Gonda
CHICAGO – It was a wire-to-wire 3-1 victory for DePaul over Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Demons picked up a pivotal three points in a BIG EAST clash at Wish Field.
Freshman forward Noeh Hernandez continued his offensive tear with a pair of goals within ten minutes of each other while Marek Gonda pressed the Pirates back line, notching an insurance goal in the 57th minute after recording two assists on Hernandez's tallies.
Junior goalkeeper Santiago Davila shined for the Blue Demons in his first appearance this season, making five saves on Seton Hall's six shots on goal including a couple of critical stops down the stretch.
DePaul improved to 3-7-4 on the campaign and 1-4-2 in the conference action, earning points in its last three matches.
How it Happened
Despite early pace from the Pirates, DePaul capitalized on an early mistake in the midfield and countered quickly as Gonda found Hernandez in space on the right side of the box before the freshman fired with his left boot past a diving Seton Hall defender to put the Blue Demons in front 1-0 in the 14th minute.
A near 10 minutes later, the Blue Demon duo connected once again in the same exact fashion, but this time Hernandez fired from the right foot to widen the lead in the 24th.
Seton Hall (7-5-3, 2-4-1) pushed pace as play resumed, firing off three shots and earning two corners in the first three minutes of the second half. The pressure mounted to a goal in the 53rd minute as the Pirates converted on a free kick just outside the box adjacent to the end line.
The Blue Demons wasted no time putting up a response as a Seton Hall yellow card 10 yards outside of the box provided the prime opportunity for Callum Watts to find the head of Marek Gonda to push the lead to 3-1 in the 57 minute.
Match Notes
Up Next: DePaul will conclude the 2023 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 28 against Villanova. First touch from Wish Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Blue Demons will honor the program's seven seniors prior to the match.
