Joseph E. Meyer died peacefully in his sleep on December 29th, 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara nee Roggow, Â his son Brian and daughter in law Carolyn. He was a dear brother to Barbara Starzyk, Thomas Meyer (Sundy), Patricia Butterfield (Thomas), Robert Meyer (Kimberly), and the late Merrianne McGowan (James). He was a beloved uncle and great uncle to dozens.Â
"Coach Joe" was born and raised in a loving home in Oak Park and grew up around the game of basketball. After graduating from DePaul Academy, he played for and was an assistant coach under his father at DePaul University before succeeding him as head coach. After his time at DePaul he had successful stints as a coach in the NBA development league, scout for the LA Clippers, and radio announcer for Northwestern basketball. His love of the game was only surpassed by his love and concern for others. He was a loyal husband, father, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend to countless people.Â
Visitation will be held on Jan. 3 from to 4-7 p.m. at Saint Vincent DePaul Church, 1010 W Webster Ave, Chicago, IL 60614. Funeral services and mass of Christian burial will be held on Jan. 4 at 11 a.m. at Saint Vincent DePaul Church. Interment at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N River Road, Des Plaines, IL, 60016. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and Saint Vincent DePaul Church would be appreciated.
