Men’s Tennis Completes Day One of HEB Tournament of Champions

Blue Demons set to play for 7th place Texas
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas. – DePaul men's tennis completes day two of the H-E-B Tournament of Champions hosted by Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
The Blue Demons kicked off the day with a 9:30 a.m. matchup against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. The Islanders captured the doubles point after both duos, Shourya Verma/Matteo Iaquinto and Jona Gitschel/Elias Anwar fell to their opponents, 6-3.
On the singles courts, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi continued to dominate, defeating three of the Blue Demons, Anwar, Almeida and Gitschel, to obtain the remaining three points and win the competition.
In the afternoon, DePaul jumped back into action for a 3:30 p.m. match against New Mexico State. The Blue Demons were quick to win the doubles point after back to back wins from Huck/Torres Almeida and Gitschel/Anwar.
On the singles side, Almeida retired from his match, giving the Aggies the equalizer. Huck responded by defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-4 to take back DePaul's lead. Gitschel dropped his match to Fe D'Ostiani in a hard fought three sets 7-5, 2-6, 3-6 and Texas A&M gained their third point after Matteo Iaquinto fell at the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 3-6. 6-7 (7-10).
Verma tied up the match once again with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory from his opponent but ultimately the Aggies left with the win after Anwar fell 6-7 (5-10), 6-3, 5-7.
UP NEXT
The Blue Demons play Oral Roberts at 9 a.m. tomorrow for 7th place.
