Blue Demons fall in regular season home finale
CHICAGO – An eight point fourth-quarter swing was the difference in a back-and-forth BIG EAST battle on Saturday afternoon which saw fourth-ranked Connecticut claim a 72-69 win over DePaul at Wintrust Arena.
The Blue Demons led by as many as five in the final period, but couldn't withstand the Huskies late rally in a game which saw 15 lead changes and nine ties.
Aneesah Morrow led four Blue Demons in double figures with a game-high 25 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals.
Darrione Rogers had 15 points while Anaya Peoples recorded 11 points including a couple crucial baskets down the stretch while matching her career-high with five steals.
Keke Rimmer added the fourth double-double of her career on senior day with 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
DePaul (15-15, 8-11 BIG EAST) opened the game with five unanswered before the Huskies responded with a 12-2 run to jump in front by five of their own. A three from Peoples and a lay-in from Rimmer gave DePaul the lead once again, leading 21-19 at the end of the first quarter.
A quick start for UConn (25-5, 17-2) in the second quarter, forced a Blue Demons timeout but DePaul grinded their way back to tie the score at 35 on a Holmes three with just three minutes left in the half. The two teams went into the locker room, tied at 37.
At the half, Morrow led the way with 10 points while Rimmer and Rogers had eight apiece.
The Blue Demons were held scoreless for a three-minute stretch to start the second half with the Huskies taking a 45-41 lead over that span before a Morrow steal and score in the open court tied the game at 45. After Connecticut took a 50-49 lead, Tara Daye and Rogers hit back-to-back triples and pulled in front 57-52 after 30 minutes.
A Morow turnaround jumper put DePaul in front 65-61, but the Huskies responded with back-to-back field goals for the ninth tie of the game with three minutes remaining. The Huskies took a two-possession advantage on a corner three-point field for their largest lead of the game, before Peoples connected down the stretch with a pair of free throws and a drive to the basket to bring the Blue Demons back within one with 17 seconds remaining. The Blue Demons had an opportunity late on a Huskies turnover but couldn't convert as UConn went on to seal the game on a pair of free throws.
