Sophomore forward among five finalists for second-consecutive year
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – DePaul sophomore forward Aneesah Morrow is among the five finalists for the 2023 Katrina McClain Award as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Thursday afternoon.
Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its sixth year recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Morrow, a finalist for the second-consecutive season, has led the Blue Demons all season long, averaging 25.7 points per game to go along with 12.0 rebounds which both rank in the top seven nationally. The Chicago native has finished in double figures in 30 of 31 games and recorded 20+ points in 26 contests. Morrow is the lone player in the country averaging 25+ points and 12+ rebounds while her 23 double-doubles is good for third nationally.
With 798 points this season, Morrow is seven points away from breaking DePaul's single-season scoring record currently held by Diana Vines since the 1988-89 campaign. The sophomore has totaled 1,520 points in her career which ranks 21st on DePaul's all-time scoring list while her 828 rebounds in just 64 games is ninth in program history. Morrow also ranks ninth with 99 career blocks.
Connecticut's Aaliyah Edwards and Villanova's Maddy Siegrist we're also named finalists as the BIG EAST accounts for three of the five candidates.
Fans can support their favorite player by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, March 3, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
This month, the finalists will be presented to McClain and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Katrina McClain Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2023 Katrina McClain Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the four other members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Award (Point Guard), Ann Meyers Drysdale Award (Shooting Guard), Cheryl Miller Award (Small Forward) and the Lisa Leslie Award (Center), in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
