Blue Demons advance to take on No. 2 Villanova Saturday Night on FS2
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – A big second quarter powered by an impressive outing from sophomore forward Aneesah Morrow was the difference as No. 7 DePaul took down 10th-seeded Providence 67-54 in Friday's First Round of the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Leading by a pair of baskets after the first quarter, the Blue Demons exploded to outscore the Friars 23-8 in the second quarter behind five field goals from Morrow to blow the game open just before halftime.
Morrow led four Blue Demons in double figures with game-highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds for her 24th double-double of the season and 51st of her career. With her second three of the game, Morrow eclipsed Diana Vines' single-season scoring mark of 804 points set in the 1988-89 season. The Chicago native sits at 824 points through 32 games in 2022-23, the most of any Blue Demon basketball player in a single season.
Anaya Peoples recorded 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Kendall Holmes tallied 11 points of her own. Darrione Rogers turned in an all-around performance with 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
DePaul outrebounded Providence 49-34 while dishing out 16 assists on 25 made field goals.
Morrow scored 11 of DePaul's first 13 points as the Blue Demons took a 13-12 lead at the first media timeout. A steal and score from Peoples as time winded down in the first allowed the Blue Demons to pull in front 18-14 after 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter saw DePaul (16-16) close the half on a 16-2 run take a 41-22 lead into the locker room.
In the first-half Morrow totaled 24 points, two shy of matching the tournament record for points in a half, while grabbing 11 rebounds.
Scoring didn't come easy in the third as both squads combined for just nine field goals with DePaul maintaining a 20-point edge, 53-33, heading into the final period.
A 6-0 Providence (13-19) run trimmed DePaul's advantage to 13 with three minutes remaining in the game to trigger a DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons fended off the late Friars run to claim the victory and advance to the Quarterfinals.
