Head Coach Matt Brothers begins his sixteenth season at the helm
KALAMAZOO, MICH. – The Blue Demons look to start the 2023-2024 season off strong as they head to Western Michigan for the WMU/Vredevelt Invitational. Tournament play will take place on Friday, Sept. 22, and Saturday, Sept. 23, respectively. Teams featured this weekend include Butler, Western Michigan, Youngstown State and DePaul.
Pending favorable weather, WMU will host the event outdoors at Sorensen Courts. On Friday, the tournament is set to open with doubles play at 9:00 A.M. CT with two rounds of singles immediately following. While the start time on Saturday is TBD, it will be a shorter day with doubles followed by the finals in singles play.
The "Band of Brothers" is excited to have seven returners from last season and a new addition in graduate transfer Larentiu Mandocescu. Mandocescu, who hails from Bucharest, Romania, will likely see action against his former team, Youngstown State, in this weekend's tournament.
The 2021 and 2022 BIG EAST Champion Blue Demons seek to bounce back after posting an 11-15 record during the 2023 dual season (2-4 in BIG EAST play).
Since 2010, the Blue Demons are 3-4 against WMU, with their last match being canceled due to inclement weather on Mar. 18, 2023. DePaul fell twice to Butler last year but are 9-1 in their previous ten meetings dating back to 2014. Additionally, the 'boys in blue' hold a two-match winning streak against the YSU Penguins in dual play.
LOOKING AHEAD
DePaul heads northeast to Ithaca, N.Y. for the International Tennis Federation Futures tournament, set to take place Sept. 29 - Oct. 8. Game times are TBD.
