Blue Demons fall to Michigan after strong start
ANN ARBOR, MICH. – After securing the first of seven potential points against No. 14 ranked Michigan, DePaul men's tennis could not overcome in singles to turn the match around, falling 6-1.
Originally, weekend power outages left DePaul's matchup against Michigan in jeopardy, but the winter storms subsided, and the two teams graced the court at their originally scheduled time.
Shourya Verma and Jona Gitschel teamed up on the No. 1 court to take down Michigan's Gavin Young and Patorn Hanchaikul, 6-4. On the No. 2 court, the graduate duo of Laurentiu Mandocescu and Leon Huck dominated their doubles opponents Bjorn Swenson and Jacob Bickersteth by a score of 6-3, securing DePaul's first point of the season.
The Blue Demons could not power through the Wolverines' tough attack, dropping each of the six singles matches in straight-set losses. In a close matchup, Elias Anwar pushed his first singles set against Mert Oral to seven, but fell 5-7, 4,6.
UP NEXT
The Blue Demons travel to Madison, Wis. on Friday, Jan. 19, to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in their second match of the season. First serve will be at 6:00 p.m. CT.
