Blue Demons Take Down Badgers in Nail-Biter

Shourya Verma notches winning point in third set tiebreaker
MADISON, Wis. – DePaul men's tennis (1-1) claimed its first victory of the season, defeating Wisconsin (0-2) 4-3, Friday evening. Shourya Verma bookended the match with wins in the first and last sets of the Blue Demons' singles outing.
With Friday's win, DePaul secured its first victory against Wisconsin in coach Matt Brothers' seventeen-year tenure.
On the No. 1 doubles court, Jona Gitschel and Verma came out on top 6-3, taking down Popovic/Minasyan. The two pairings of Laurentiu Mandocescu/Leon Huck and Sven Moser/Elias Anwar each fell in their matchups, granting Wisconsin the first point of the bout.
A trio of Blue Demons in Moser, Pablo Torres Almeida, and Matteo Iaquinto won their 3rd, 5th, and 6th court matches, respectively. In nearly identical fashion, the three each conquered their singles opponent by two games in the first set and three in the second.
Going into the third sets of the remaining two matches, DePaul needed just one point between Verma and Mandocescu to secure the team win.
In his singles victory against Tomas Zlatohlavek, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), Verma fought off three match points on his opponent's serve, ensuring the Blue Demons returned to Lincoln Park victorious.

The Blue Demons host the Creighton Bluejays at home on Saturday, Jan. 27, in its first BIG EAST feature of the season. Action is set to begin at 5:15 p.m. CST from Lake Shore Fitness.
