Logan Finnegan tallies seventh goal of the season in the setback

AKRON, Ohio – DePaul men's soccer fell to 13th-ranked Akron 3-1 in the 2024 BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The Blue Demons conclude their season with a 6-8-3 record after making their first appearance in the league tournament since 2016.

The Zips, 2024 Midwest Division Regular Season Champions, advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament behind a pair of first half goals and an insurance tally in the early stages of the second half.

Graduate student Logan Finnegan capped his collegiate career with his seventh goal of the season and 21st of his career in the 64th minute. Sophomore forward Liam Mullins recorded his fourth assist of the 2024 campaign.

Noeh Hernandez, George Wyatt and Finnegan each recorded shots for the Blue Demons.

Goalkeeper Santiago Davila posted a pair of saves on 14 shots faced.

How It Happened
Neither side saw chances through the first 25 minutes although Akron controlled possession in its attacking third.

Akron struck first in the 27th minute as Malik Henry drove down the right channel and cut back for a trailing Victor Gaulmin who fired from outside the box and found the bottom left of the next past a diving Davila.

Contact just outside the box earned the Zips a free kick in the 30th minute where the initial shot was blocked before the nation's leading goal Emil Jasskelainen cleaned up the deflection to make it a two nil game.

Two minutes into the second half Akron added a third tally, a header from Jaaskelainen off service from Henry to make it 3-0.

The Blue Demons capitalized on their lone chance of the match when Mullins drove down the left channel and found Finnegan on the goal line who finished it off after a deflection from the Zips keeper to trim the deficit to 3-1in the 64th minute.

DePaul would go on to generate just one more shot in the remainder of the match
