The Blue Demons Excelled on the First Day of Competition
CHICAGO – DePaul track and field completed its first day of competition at Wisconsin's Windy City Invite. Alex Bernstein stole the show with a first place finish and a new school record in the men's weight throw. Olivia Borowiak followed suit, topping her previous school record in the mile after competing in the prestigious Gold Coast Mile Invite.
"Alex had a great day," said assistant head coach Geoff Wayton. "He broke a historic school record on the last throw in the midst of competition because he wanted to win. He is just a heck of a competitor. Olivia ran the most mature race of her career. She ran her own race, making a big move with about 600 to go and she just caught momentum. To break her own school record by three seconds is something else. I'm really excited for her. Overall, we were competing at a high-level field today and those who felt great executed well."
The Blue Demon earned DePaul's first top-three finish of the evening, winning the men's weight throw with a final mark of 21.65m. This new personal best mark broke the previous school record of 21.05m from 2017 and upped Berstein's national ranking to 16th place.
Borowiak rounded out the competition with another school record break after competing in the Gold Coast Mile Invite. The Yorkville, Ill. native bested her previous school record with a new personal best time of 4:42.44. Borowiak broke the mile record at the GVSU Big Meet almost one year ago to the day on Feb. 10, 2023.
In addition to Bernstein and Borowiak, two more Blue Demons obtained new personal bests in their designated events. In the women's 400m, Nadja Moll ran a final time of 55.92 and in the women's weight throw, Billie Martin threw a new personal best mark of 20.04m, just .16m off the school record.
