Seventh Seeded Seton Hall Downs No. 10 DePaul in BIG EAST First Round

Kate Clarke and Katlyn Gilbert total 18 points apiece
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – No. 7 Seton Hall knocked out No. 10 DePaul from the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament on Friday afternoon by way of a 71-64 decision inside Mohegan Sun Arena. Kate Clarke and Katlyn Gilbert recorded game-highs of 18 points apiece, but it wasn't enough as four Pirates finished in double figures and the team shot 50-percent (13-26) from three-point range.
Clarke turned in her fourth-consecutive double-figure outing behind four threes while Gilbert turned in her 13th double-digit scoring performance of the season in addition to grabbing six steals and five rebounds. Gilbert's six steals matches the most in a single game by a Blue Demon in the BIG EAST Tournament alongside Sonya Morris's six takeaways in 2020.
Graduate student Jorie Allen added a game-high nine rebounds in addition to seven points.
As a team, the Blue Demons dished out 18 assists, the most in a tournament game since the postseason event moved to Mohegan Sun in 2021.
Azana Baines totaled a team-high 17 points for Seton Hall while Micah Gray added 16 of her own.
How it Happened
Clarke and Gilbert combined to record the first four baskets of the game as the teams traded field goals at a frenetic pace. The Pirates scored seven unanswered to separate themselves, 17-9, with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Demons would hold Seton Hall scoreless for the final four minutes of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 17-13 with 10 minutes gone.
A steal and fastbreak layup from Gilbert put DePaul in front for the first time on the afternoon, 20-18, three minutes into the second quarter. Seton Hall went on to rattle off a 12-2 run to take a 10-point advantage just before halftime. The Blue Demons trailed 35-24 at halftime with Clarke and Gilbert tallying a team-best eight points.
Clarke scored 10 of DePaul's 19 points in the third quarter as the Blue Demons came within a pair of possessions before Seton Hall beat the buzzer with a triple to end the third in front 52-43.
Seton Hall (17-13) led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before an 11-2 DePaul run cut it to a six-point game with 90 seconds remaining. The Blue Demons would inch no further as the Pirates converted on free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
