Blue Demons knock off Musketeers on senior night
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis delivered a dominating performance against conference rival Xavier, clinching a 5-2 victory Saturday night at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
The victory extends the Blue Demon win streak over Xavier to six, accompanied by an impressive 11-1 record against the Musketeers since 2009. To cap off their regular season, the Blue Demons have emerged victorious in five of their last six matches.
DePaul concluded dual play with an 11-9 record, alongside a commendable 4-1 record in BIG EAST play.
Individually, Pablo Torres Almeida finished with a seven-match win streak in singles, boasting an overall 10-2 record, while Leon Huck and Sven Moser capped off a dominant year with a six-match win streak in doubles play, adding to their 11-2 record.
The Blue Demons started off strong in doubles yet again, swiftly claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2, securing both courts in a decisive 6-2 decision. Shourya Verma and Jona Gitschel claimed the doubles point at the No. 1 spot in their victory over Ryan Cahill and Pascal Mosberger.
In just his third match at No. 2 singles this season, Huck propelled the Blue Demons with a straight-set victory of 6-1, 6-2 over Xavier's Mosberger.
In his season debut for DePaul, graduate student Vito Tonejc impressed at No. 1, taking down Cahill by a score of 6-1, 6-3, to put the Blue Demons up 3-0 early.
In a third-set thriller, Pablo Torres Almeida once again proved instrumental in clinching the match for DePaul in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles.
At the No. 3 position, Verma mounted a comeback to defeat Marco Pennelli, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, extending his winning streak to three matches.
