The Blue Demons bring home six records overall
Des Moines – DePaul track and field completes its final day of competition at the Drake Relays, Saturday afternoon. After a successful day of competition, the team returns home with four relay record breaks.
"This was a great meet for us," said head coach Dave Dopek. "Not perfect, but we did learn a lot about this team. Many people stepped up and ran great relay legs. Our level of fitness is very evident. Over the last several weeks we have excelled at making progress in the field events and individual races. It was great to see that carry over into this exciting relay meet. The team's positive approach to this meet was evident all through the weekend. Multiple weather delays, huge temperature swings, and a several severe weather/tornado warnings, didn't sway them from their goals. It has been a while since we were last at Drake. If the team's performance this weekend is any indicator, they enjoyed our return."
The women's distance medley was the first squad to crush a record. Meghan Dieball, Olivia Borowiak, Lauren Pacsi and Isabella Orozco teamed up and broke a DePaul record from almost four decades ago with a time of 11:26.07.
Both sprint medley teams also etched their names into the DePaul record book. On the men's side, Dominic Cole, Daniel Fasasi, Jarel Terry, and Damian Rodriguez earned second place and broke the 2014 school record with a final time of 3:17.34. On the women's side, Jetta Mays, Claire Dunn, Kayliah Motes, and Alexa Havon earned third place, breaking a 2013 record with a final time of 3:50.66.
The final school record break of the day was the women's 4x400m relay made up of Kayliah Motes, Nadja Moll, Sonja Nagle and Claire Dunn. The squad ran a final time of 3:41.00, breaking the school record from 2019.
The men's 4x100m relay team earned third place overall in the finals. Darius Brown, Charles Lewis, Dominic Cole, Cameron Attucks ran a final time of 40.16.
Apart from the relay teams, some individual athletes also had a success day in Des Moines, Billie Martin threw a new personal best in the women's hammer throw with a final mark of 59.19 and Brown earned third with a final time of 13.66 in the men's 110m hurdle finals.
"Looking forward, we need to clean a few things up before the championship portion of season starts, but what they have proven is that they are a team that believes. In themselves and each other. We look forward to getting back to preparing for the Big East Championship meet."
