Blue Demons add front court depth with former four-star recruit
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball head coach Doug Bruno announced the signing of redshirt-junior transfer Meg Newman on Thursday afternoon. Newman lands in Chicago from the University of Alabama with two seasons of eligibility remaining after beginning her collegiate career at Arizona State.
"Meg Newman adds tremendous front court depth to our 2024-25 team. She brings with her a great motor, energy and enthusiasm. Combine those attributes with her skill level and we have a great player joining our program" Bruno said.
The Indianapolis, Ind. native has appeared in 61 games in her career, making six starts. In her redshirt-freshman season with the Sun Devils, Newman ranked second on the team in rebounds with five per game while leading the squad in field-goal percentage at a .469 clip. She turned in career-highs of 12 points and 18 boards in a win over Prairie View A&M. Newman's breakout game in her time with the Crimson Tide came against Samford, with a 10-point, 11-rebound performance for the second double-double of her career.
"I chose DePaul because I felt a belief from Coach Bruno and his staff that we could be really successful here. Chicago is a place of endless opportunity and I wanted to finish my college career in a place where possibilities are limitless" Newman remarked. "I think together, we can do some really special things and I can't wait for the rest of the DePaul community to share the experience with us."
A four-star recruit coming out of North Central High School, Newman was ranked the No. 33 overall prospect in the class of 2021 by ESPN.com. As a senior, Newman was named an Indiana All-Star, Adidas All-American and was a finalist for Indiana Miss Basketball. She helped the Panthers put together a 24-3 record her senior year.
Newman plans to study Political Science and will join the Blue Demons this summer alongside six incoming freshmen.
