Blue Demons to remember legacy of former assistant coach against Xavier
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball is set to honor the memory of former DePaul assistant coach Maggie Dixon on Wednesday, Jan. 22 when the Blue Demons host Xavier at Wintrust Arena.
Dixon spent five years, from 2000-2005, on head coach Doug Bruno's staff before moving on to head up the women's basketball program at Army West Point just 11 days before the start of the 2005-06 season.
Just as she inspired those that she encountered through her time in Chicago, she did the same at the U.S. Military Academy with her gift for bringing out the best in others.
Dixon rallied the campus community to support the women's program in bigger and bigger numbers as they witnessed the Black Knights put together a historically successful season capped with a 69-68 win over Holy Cross to claim the Patriot League Tournament title and secure the school's first appearance in the NCAA tournament, in men's or women's basketball, where they lost the opener to national powerhouse, Tennessee.
Just a day after the women's Final Four in Boston, Dixon collapsed from heart arrhythmia and was rushed to the base hospital and later airlifted to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y. Dixon passed away at the age of 28.
Bruno on his way home from the Final Four in Boston when he heard about Dixon's situation. He immediately changed his flight and jumped into a four-seat plane headed straight to Westchester County.
"She was just a good woman. She made you feel good about yourself. It didn't matter what you did or what kind of day you were having, Maggie had this uncanny, unique ability, a personality, a charisma that made you feel good about yourself," said Bruno.
DePaul Athletics is partnering with RUSH Physical Therapy and the Matt Magine Jr. One Shot Foundation to offer compression only CPR training prior to and during Wednesday's game.
