Sophomore finishes fourth in men’s 8k
PEORIA, Ill. – DePaul cross country closed out regular season competition Friday afternoon at the 25th edition of the Bradley Pink Invitational with strong performances in a competitive field. Dynamic sophomore duo Mohamed Abdullahi and Vivian Wyller led DePaul in each of their respective races.
The Bradley Pink Invitational featured two race sections, the White Open Division and the Red Invite Division.
DePaul finished 13th in the men's 8k event, while the women finished 16th in the women's 6k event.
"The men did a little bit better this week," said head coach Geoff Wayton. "Mohamed ran the second-fastest time in school history, just behind our all-time best runner. Getting under 24 minutes is something really special, and that was a big goal for him. It was a pretty elite field, and that was our best individual performance at the Bradley Pink Classic during my time here. John Bush ran really well; a personal record by about a minute. He ran tough on a challenging course. We had a lot of runners today grab some momentum, which is so important this time of year."
Abdullahi continued his impressive streak this fall, as he notched a PR in his third-straight race, finishing fourth with a time of 23:55.07 and recording the second fastest 8k time in school history. Junior Mason Krieg finished sequentially, with a 39th place finish and a time of 24:48.95.
Cole Tupper and John Bush came through next, finishing within a second of each other as they placed 83rd and 85th. This was senior Bush's first race appearance since the NIU Opener on Sept. 5.
Daniel Grauer rounded out the top-five Blue Demon finishers, with a time of 26:27.57.
"Vivian honestly had a transformative race. She was up in the front pack early, and that's a huge confidence booster," said Wayton. Isabella improved last week's performance, with a 24-second PR. Gianna takes the cake, however, she dropped a minute and a half off her previous time. We're getting there. We just need to stay healthy and put the finishing touches on the season before the conference meet."
On the women's side, Wyller led the Blue Demon pack first for the second time in as many races, finishing with a personal best time of 21:14.15 and a 25th place finish. Isabella Orozco came across shortly after, earning a personal best with 22:00.63.
Juniors Kalina Urbaniak and Gianna Sanchez crossed the finish line within five seconds of each other and both earned personal bests with times of 22:17.14 and 22:21.22 respectively.
Five of the women's runners including the top four DePaul finishers finished the day with personal bests in the 6k event underscoring continued improvement throughout the season.
