Nilsson, Smith, and Stula all begin play 1-0
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Blue Demon trio of Clara Nilsson, Hannah Smith, and Sasha Stula all found the victory column in singles competition on Day One of the Purdue Invite at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana.
DePaul opened the tournament with doubles play versus Miami (OH) at 8 a.m. CT. The RedHawks deployed Allie Faulkner and Malu Oliveira against the Blue Demon duo of Hannah Smith/Clara Nilsson, who had won three of four coming into the match. In a competitive contest, Faulkner and Oliveira prevailed, 6-4.
For the first time this fall, the junior pair of Roberta Sechi and Stula partnered together in doubles. Facing the Miami (OH) tandem, Maria Komar/Avery Voss, Sechi and Stula could not find their footing, losing 6-4.
In singles, Stula started quickly, dominating Faulkner in a straight-set sweep, 6-2, 6-0. The second-team All-BIG EAST selection from a year ago is 5-1 in her last six matches.
Smith faced Oliveira whom Smith had lost in doubles earlier in the morning. In a back-and-forth first set, Smith edged Oliveira, 7-5. Oliveira answered with a 6-2 victory in set two to force a tiebreaker. Smith leaned on her experience to take control of the final game, winning 6-4 and claiming the match.
Freshman Yasemin Pehlivan also played a three-set thriller against the RedHawks' Komar. Pehlivan took an early lead after grinding out a set one triumph, 7-6 (7). Komar tied the match after game two with a 6-4 win and rode the momentum to take the final set, 6-3.
Nilsson captured the final victory for the Scarlet and Blue when she battled Voss. In a tight first match, Nilsson gained the advantage late to take the opening set, 7-5. The Malmö, Sweden native used the lead to play aggressively in set two, which resulted in a 6-3 victory.
Roberta Sechi rounded out play on day one, losing 6-1, 6-1.
