Blue Demons earn conference award for fourth consecutive week
CHICAGO – DePaul women's tennis brought home BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week and Doubles Team of the Week awards, the league announced Monday afternoon. No. 1 singles Hannah Smith claimed the singles honor, while the No. 49-ranked duo Eva Goncharov and Smith won the doubles accolade for the third consecutive week.
The Blue Demons opened the weekend on the road against Omaha. In singles, Smith dominated the Mavericks' Paula Arcarons, 6-1, 6-2 on court one. The Scarlet and Blue built off the junior's momentum, defeating Omaha 7-0 and capturing their first shutout victory of the season. Goncharov and Smith competed in a back-and-forth battle with Arcarons and Zoe Adkins, resulting in an unfinished, 6-6 match.
DePaul traveled to BIG EAST foe, Creighton on Saturday. Smith beat reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, Bianca Rademacher, 7-5, 7-5, ending Rademacher's seven-match win streak to start the dual season. In doubles competition, Goncharov and Smith took down Racemacher and Negin, 6-2, en route to a 6-1 triumph for the Blue Demons. The tandem holds a 6-2 record with six-straight unbeaten matches.
