Blue Demons secure third-straight win Tuesday evening
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – DePaul men's tennis earned its third straight victory Tuesday evening, downing Southern Mississippi 6-1 in the first of four consecutive road matches leading into postseason play. Junior Pablo Torres Almeida secured the clinching point for the fourth time this season—one-third of the Blue Demons' 12 team wins.
The Blue Demons (12-8, 3-1 BIG EAST) opened their spring break tour with a commanding performance on the outdoor courts, taking seven of nine matchups (two doubles, five singles).
After dropping the No. 3 doubles court, DePaul bounced back in style. Jona Gitschel and Thomas Giles edged out their opponents at No. 1 with a 6-4 win, and Matteo Iaquinto and Marko Milosavljevic matched that score at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.
DePaul controlled singles play from start to finish, earning five straight-set wins across the lineup. Quang Vinh Nguyen set the tone at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-3 sweep, followed by Andy Hadziabdic at No. 4, who rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win. Torres Almeida then delivered the clincher at No. 2, notching a 6-4, 6-2 decision to seal DePaul's fifth road win of the dual season.
Freshmen Marko Milosavljevic (No. 3) and Tobias Leitner (No. 5) each added to the tally with respective 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-3 victories. A close third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 went in favor of Southern Miss., but the 6-1 final score marked a strong start to DePaul's southern swing.
