DePaul sets a program record for academic year GPA
CHICAGO – DePaul Athletics capped off the 2024-25 academic year with a department-record 3.608 cumulative grade point average. This marks the first time in recorded history that the department surpassed a 3.6 GPA, underscoring the continued academic success aligned with the DePaul Athletics 'Dream Big' Strategic Plan.
"Academic success is the cornerstone of our mission at DePaul," said Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy. "At the start of the year, I challenged our student-athletes to elevate to another level, and I'm incredibly proud of all they accomplished this year. Breaking the 3.6 GPA mark as a department is a historic milestone that reflects the commitment of our student-athletes, coaches, academic advisors and support staff. Putting ourselves among the nation's best in academic performance is another example of how we continue to Dream Big."
All 15 DePaul sports programs achieved a GPA above 3.0, with 11 teams finishing above a 3.5.
Women's Tennis led the department with a 3.869 GPA. Nearly 90 percent of DePaul student-athletes earned a GPA above a 3.0, with 73 percent achieving a 3.5 or higher.
"I could not be prouder of our DePaul student-athletes and the success they have had in the classroom this year," said Dr. Jocelyn Carter, Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) and Professor of Clinical Psychology. "They manage demanding full-time class loads while they practice and compete for up to 20 hours per week. These numbers reflect their time management skills, discipline and focus, and ability to prioritize what matters most."
Four teams – Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Cross Country and Softball – set academic year GPA records, while Women's Track & Field achieved its highest GPA in a non-pandemic year.
In 2024, the Division I grade-point average was a 3.0 nationally and a 3.39 among BIG EAST Schools.
The Blue Demons also closed the spring quarter with a 3.613, topping the department's previous record from the winter quarter for the best quarterly GPA outside of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Introduced in 2021, DePaul's Dream Big Strategic Plan outlines five guiding principles, including Academic Excellence. This pillar emphasizes holistic student-athlete development – empowering Blue Demons to reach their academic, professional and personal goals while preparing to lead in life beyond college athletics.
