Timme fires 17 kills, Blue Demons fall in four at D.J. Sokol Arena
OMAHA, Neb. – DePaul volleyball saw its historic start to BIG EAST play come to an end, falling 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 17-25) to Creighton Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Blue Demons (11-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) entered the match 3-0 in league play for the first time in program history and carried a five-match winning streak, but the Bluejays (8-7, 3-0 BIG EAST) found a way in the closing stretch of each set.
"Despite the loss, there was a lot to build on," said head Marie Zidek. "We came off a short week with that marathon match against UConn and the five-set thriller with Marquette, and I thought parts of our game left us at inopportune times, not because we didn't want to make the play, but because some fatigue started to show. Even so, we competed and competed. That match could easily have been a three-set sweep if we hadn't fought to extend it with great play and a .300 attack percentage in the third. What a beautiful learning moment for us, another chapter in the crucible, and something we can use this week to fuel us for our next BIG EAST matches at home."
Kendall Timme paced DePaul with 17 kills, adding nine digs, followed by Isabela Tavares Salomon with 12 kills and three blocks, and Caroline Wright with seven kills. Leonor Polezzi ran the offense with 34 assists and 11 digs, and her three aces extended her streak to six straight matches with three or more. Abby Cahill led the defense with 15 digs and two aces. DePaul out-dug Creighton 48-39, but Creighton hit .215 to DePaul's .096 and won the block battle 14-5.
How it Happened
SET ONE | Creighton opened on a 5-0 run and stretched it to 15-7 before DePaul answered with six-straight points, capped by kills from Tavares Salomon and Wright, to cut it to 15-13. The Blue Demons pulled within two on three occasions, the last at 24-22, but the Bluejays closed it out, 25-22.
SET TWO | DePaul jumped out early behind Timme and led by as many as six at 12-6 before Creighton tied it at 14-14. The Bluejays took control from there and finished it off, 25-22, despite late kills from Tavares Salomon that kept DePaul within three.
SET THREE | Down 5-2, DePaul answered with a 6-0 run on Polezzi's serve, including consecutive aces, to take a 6-5 lead it would not give back. The Blue Demons pushed the lead to seven at 15-8, and Timme delivered eight kills on .636 hitting in the frame, closing it on a Diana kill, 25-20.
SET FOUR | Creighton built a 6-2 lead and used a six-block frame to stretch it to 20-11. DePaul kept fighting and got kills from Epps and Timme late, but the Bluejays held the advantage and closed the match, 25-17.
