Four Blue Demons score in double-figures
CHICAGO — DePaul men's basketball closed out its exhibition play Friday evening at Wintrust Arena as Notre Dame came out on top, 71-63. The Blue Demons shot 51.9 percent from the field in the first half, and were bolstered by a 14 point performance from Fabián Flores.
Flores shot 7-of-8 from the floor in addition to six rebounds and three blocks for an all-around complete game. He was joined in double figure point scoring by Kruz McClure (13), Koree Cotton (12) and Ade Popoola (10). McClure, Layden Blocker and Noah Meeusen all dished out a team-best four assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Cotton opened the scoring for DePaul with eight-straight points on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. The Fighting Irish responded by knocking down five-three pointers to level the game at 17 apiece. Scoring came at a premium late in the first half, with both teams trading baskets across an eight-minute stretch. DePaul closed the first half on a Gwath tip-in and McClure three-pointer for a 36-35 lead.
Notre Dame opened the second half on an 8-2 scoring run, before a second-chance three-pointer by Popoola cut the Irish's lead to two. McClure found Flores for alley-oops on consecutive possessions, before both teams hit a three-minute scoreless drought. Notre Dame built its largest lead of the game at 69-58, taking advantage of second chance opportunities. Flores' fifth dunk of the night cut the deficit to nine, but the Fighting Irish closed out the game for the exhibition win.
