CHICAGO – DePaul men's basketball has landed the addition of 2025 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, Magoon Gwath for the upcoming 2026-27 season. Gwath arrives in Chicago after two seasons at San Diego State where he averaged 8.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
"We are excited to add Magoon to our frontcourt and our DePaul basketball family," said head coach Chris Holtmann. "He has length, athleticism, versatility and a high defensive IQ. He has also shown the ability to make threes at an efficient rate. His continued skill development offensively will be important for his growth and success. We look forward to getting him here and getting to work as he transitions to the BIG EAST and contributes to what we are building here in Chicago."
A Euless, Texas native, Gwath was also the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year after ranking seventh nationally with 2.1 blocks per game. His 68 blocks set the San Diego State freshman record, while his two-season total of 105 blocks ranks eighth on the San Diego State career list.
Entering the 2025-26 season, Gwath was named to the Preseason Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch List. Prior to arriving at San Diego State in 2023, Gwath attended Veritas Prep and Trinity High School. As a junior, he was named honorable mention District 3-6A.
He joins a frontcourt with a pair of seven-footers in DePaul returner Fabián Flores and Fresno State transfer, Wilson Jacques. DePaul will have multiple seven-footers on its roster for the second season in a row, previously never having done so.
