CHICAGO – DePaul Athletics has welcomed Roger Sancho as a new Senior Athletic Trainer, working primarily with the Blue Demons men's basketball program. Sancho brings more than a decade of experience with National Basketball Association (NBA) organizations to DePaul.
Sancho most recently served as Head Athletic Trainer for the Phoenix Suns, where he oversaw the organization's athletic training services. Prior to his time in Phoenix, Sancho spent three seasons as Head Athletic Trainer for the Los Angeles Lakers, including the Lakers' championship run during the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament in 2023. In his role with the Lakers, Sancho oversaw a staff of medical professionals, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians and sports nutritionists.
"We're thrilled to welcome Roger and his family to DePaul," said head men's basketball coach Chris Holtmann. "Roger brings an incredible level of experience and expertise to our program, having spent more than a decade working in the NBA with some of the best athletes and organizations in the world. His knowledge of sports medicine, performance and player care will be a tremendous resource for our student-athletes. Just as importantly, Roger understands what it takes to operate at a championship level, and we're excited about the impact he will have on our program."
"Additionally, we are grateful to Mike Sommer who dedicated nine years to our program. Mike has been an outstanding, dedicated member of this department and we wish him and his family all the best as he pursues new opportunities."
Before joining the Lakers, Sancho spent several seasons with the Golden State Warriors as an associate head athletic trainer and performance coach. During his tenure with Golden State, he was part of three NBA championship teams in 2015, 2017 and 2018. He was also part of the 2015 NBA G-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors, and has Olympic experience with Team Nigeria Basketball for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Sancho began his career as a graduate assistant at Baylor, working with the men's basketball, baseball, track and field and cross country programs while also assisting with strength and conditioning responsibilities. He later gained additional experience at SMU as an intern athletic trainer before beginning his NBA career.
Sancho earned his undergraduate degree in athletic training from UT-Arlington before receiving a Master of Science in Sport Management from Baylor.
