90th minute goal salvages point for Blue Demons
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – DePaul men's soccer erased a late deficit and rallied for a 2-2 draw at Bowling Green on Friday night at Cochrane Stadium, with Jordan Clagette's goal in the final minute of regulation salvaging a point for the Blue Demons in a back-and-forth affair. DePaul moves to 2-1-3 on the season, while the Falcons are now 1-4-1.
After a quiet first half for both squads, the Blue Demons grabbed the lead on Keagan Pace's strike in the 57th minute, only to see Bowling Green respond with a pair of goals in quick succession in the 78th and 82nd minutes. DePaul never quit, finding the back of the net on a free kick with 23 seconds left to earn its third draw on the road while trailing this season.
Senior midfielder Noeh Hernandez assisted on both goals, while defender Ethan Gordon provided the helper on Clagette's game-tying finish. Goalkeeper Chance Johnson made three saves to keep DePaul in it. Bowling Green held a narrow 17-13 edge in shots.
How It Happened
Pace had the first look of the game in the sixth minute, but a soft touch didn't beat the Falcons keeper.
Despite a flurry of chances on the doorstep for Bowling Green, DePaul's back line stood tall, including a diving save from Johnson in the 27th minute to keep the match level.
The two sides were tied 0-0 at the break, with a combined 10 shots in the first 45 minutes. Bowling Green held a 6-4 edge in shots at the half.
The Falcons were the aggressors out of the locker room, firing off the first three shots of the second half, including a strike initially called a goal in the 51st minute but later called offside to keep the match even. DePaul broke through in the 57th minute when Hernandez corralled a failed clearance, beat his defender one-on-one, and squared it for Pace, who buried it to make it a 1-0 ballgame.
Searching for insurance, the Blue Demons had a great look in the 72nd minute when Daniel Hickiewicz found Quinn Bedwell inside the six-yard box, but his volley sailed too high to keep it 1-0.
Bowling Green answered in the 78th minute as Joshua Pedersen finished from just inside the box off a feed from Mouhamadou Bachir Cisse to level it at 1-1, then took the lead in the 82nd minute on a Lucas Brinkman strike.
The Blue Demons were never out of the search for an equalizer, including a free kick from Hernandez in the 87th minute that sailed just high, along with a corner kick in the 89th minute.
With 23 seconds remaining, DePaul cashed in. Moments after Bowling Green was whistled for a yellow card, Hernandez switched the field to the far post, where Gordon got a touch to send it on to Clagette, who finished it home to earn a point on the road for the Blue Demons.
