DePaul continues early-season progress in first Chicago meet

CHICAGO – DePaul cross country recorded five all-time top-10 performances Friday at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational as the Blue Demons continued building toward the postseason in their first Chicago meet of the season.

Competing in the Open division, the DePaul men finished first in the Men's 8K, while the women placed sixth in the Women's 6K.

Mohamed Abdullahi led the men in his season debut, placing second overall in 23:50.94. The performance marked another all-time top-10 8K showing for the junior, who already owns a faster mark which sits as No. 2 on DePaul's all-time list.

Freshman Alex Krieg followed in fifth, clocking 24:10.48 to move to No. 3 on DePaul's all-time 8K list. Senior Mason Krieg finished sixth behind his younger brother in 24:16.99 to move to No. 5 all-time.

Bryce Counihan added an eighth-place finish in 24:32.61, while Kiefer Barnes rounded out DePaul's scoring five in 12th at 24:38.18. The five scorers finished within 47.24 seconds of one another, marking the men's smallest one-to-five gap of the season.

On the women's side, senior Kalina Urbaniak led the Blue Demons with an eighth-place finish in 20:48.02, moving to No. 3 on DePaul's all-time 6K list.

Freshman Ava Helmbrecht followed in 31st, completing her first collegiate 6K in 21:29.35 to move to No. 9 all-time at DePaul.

Tessa Roe made her season debut with a 32nd-place finish in 21:36.54. Isabella Orozco placed 40th in 21:47.03, while Vivian Wyller rounded out the scoring five in 42nd at 21:52.05. DePaul's top five were separated by just over one minute.

"With both teams being in the open race, we wanted kind of a low-pressure, low-stakes weekend where the athletes could work on closing the one-to-five and one-to-seven gaps," said head coach Geoff Wayton. "Both teams were able to do that. The men had their best gap of the season, and our women's one-to-five gap was excellent."

The Blue Demons also recorded numerous personal bests throughout both lineups despite entering the meet amid a heavy training period.

Following Friday's competition, DePaul will shift its attention to a three-week training block before returning to racing in Terre Haute.
