DePaul Sweeps Providence in BIG EAST Opener

Blue Demons grabs sixth sweep of season, improve to 9-3
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul volleyball opened BIG EAST play in style Friday night, sweeping Providence 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-13) at Alumni Hall to move to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference. The Blue Demons fought through two tight sets before blowing the third open, building a 15-point lead at one stretch on the way to the sweep, their sixth in nine wins this season.
The best part of that match was how the team needed to figure out its offensive counterattack against a very crafty Providence squad, said head coach Marie Zidek. Each set, our serve, block, and defense got better, so that by the middle of set three, we were really dedicated to creating counterattack opportunities for ourselves, and that allowed us to be creative and figure things out on the fly.
Isabela Tavares Salomon led all players with 12 kills on a scorching .321 clip, while Kendall Timme (7 kills), Martina Diana (7 kills, 8 digs) and Jade Dudley-Epps (7 kills) all reached the seven-kill mark. Leonor Polezzi orchestrated the attack with 31 assists, added four service aces and chipped in six digs. Libero Abby Cahill anchored the back row with 11 digs and a near-flawless .933 serve-receive percentage. As a team, DePaul out-hit Providence .245 to .155.
Providence got a team-high seven kills from Tori Otter, while setters Miller McDonald (14 assists) and Sarah Musial (9 assists) split time running the Friars' offense, and libero Ava Dyer led all players with 13 digs.
How it Happened
SET ONE | DePaul and Providence traded points through a tight opening stretch, with the set tied 11 times. The Blue Demons edged ahead late and held on behind kills from Tavares Salomon and Timme, closing it out 25-22.
SET TWO | Providence hung around for much of the set, tying it as late as 19-19, but DePaul answered every push. Kills from Tavares Salomon and Diana down the stretch, paired with a Friar attack error, sealed the set 25-21.
SET THREE | DePaul put the match away in dominant fashion, ripping off a run capped by a string of Diana and Epps kills to surge ahead 21-6, a 15-point cushion. Providence battled back with a run of its own to trim the deficit to 22-12, but the Blue Demons shut the door from there, closing out the set, and the sweep, 25-13.
