Chema Carranza joined the DePaul men’s tennis coaching staff in August of 2019 as an assistant coach.
He helped coach Matt Brothers and the Blue Demons win their final three dual matches of 2019-20 before the season was closed down by the NCAA because of the coronavirus pandemic. They finished the abbrviated spring season with an 8-9 dual record.
Carranza contributed his leadership to a pair of 2019-20 postseason awards. For the 12th time in the last 13 years, DePaul earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Team Academic Award, and its 3.89 team GPA was among the highest in the nation according to the ITA.
In addition, the Blue Demons behind junior Tripp Tuff won the ITA Community Service Award for the third time in the last four years.
Carranza comes to the Blue Demons after spending the 2018-19 season as a student assistant coach at Wisconsin.
He was an outstanding tennis player with the Badgers, ranking as high as No. 2 in the nation in doubles in 2017 and finishing that season at No. 14 teaming with Josef Dodridge.
Carranza and Dodridge became the first doubles team in Wisconsin tennis history to win at the NCAA Regionals in 2017. That same year the Carranza/Dodridge tandem reach the semifinals of the Fall Nationals.
The native of Sevilla, Spain led the Badgers to the No. 24 national ranking in 2016 and to the school’s fifth NCAA tournament victory in program history.
Competing primarily as the No. 1 doubles team and from No. 1 to No. 4 singles in his career, Carranza finished with more than 80 career singles and doubles wins.
He was honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
