Yuliya Shupenia joined the DePaul women’s tennis coaching staff as an assistant coach in August of 2018 after having played for coach Mark Ardizzone for three seasons.
In her first season on the coaching end, she helped guide DePaul to its fourth BIG EAST title and NCAA Championship appearance in the last six years. Shupenia and Ardizzone were honored with the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award.
She is a 2017 graduate of DePaul and among the top tennis players in the program’s history.
As a sophomore, Shupenia was honored as the BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and was All-BIG EAST First Team. She was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete the same season with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
She went 28-6 as a sophomore and was ranked as high as No. 102 in the National Singles Rankings. The Blue Demon standout won both her singles and doubles matches in the NCAA tournament opener. She was 23-5 in doubles that season.
Shupenia was ranked No. 94 in the country in singles as a junior after going 13-4 at No. 1 singles that spring. She teamed with Rebeca Mitrea to finish with a national ranking of No. 65 in doubles and qualified for the NCAA Doubles Tournament. She was named an ITA Player to Watch from the Midwest Region.
The native of Gomel, Belarus earned a BIG EAST postgraduate scholarship and worked as a teaching pro at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, home court of DePaul tennis.
