Nick Vogel enters his fourth season as DePaul Volleyball’s top assistant coach and Recruiting Coordinator after joining the staff on Feb. 5, 2018.
In his first 3 years with the program, Vogel helped guide DePaul Volleyball to its highest ever finish in the BIG EAST, a BIG EAST Academic Conference Championship, and the highest win percentage in the program’s last 21 years.
In addition to coaching offensive systems, Vogel works directly with the program’s middle blockers as well as implementing DePaul’s blocking system. In 2019, under Vogel’s tutelage, sophomore middle blocker Donna Brown was named to the All-BIG EAST Team and finished with the highest hitting percentage in the conference at a .399 clip. This hitting percentage was also a single season program record for any DePaul Volleyball athlete.
Vogel also over-sees team culture development, match scheduling, opponent scouting, video analysis, and DePaul’s highly successful summer camps. In his first 2 summers with the program, DePaul’s summer camps hosted the most campers ever and sold out in both 2018 and 2019.
Prior to joining DePaul’s staff, Vogel served as the volunteer assistant coach on staff alongside now Head Coach Marie Zidek at the University of San Diego. During his tenure, USD won a WCC Conference Championship, boasted a WCC Conference Player of the Year in Kristen Gengenbacher, placed four players on the AVCA’s Pacific South All-Region Team, and made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.
Prior to his time at University of San Diego, Vogel was the top Assistant Coach for the Men’s Volleyball program at UC San Diego. Under his direction, UCSD, participating in the country’s #1 men’s volleyball conference, accumulated the most conference wins in a 7-year span. Additionally, Junior opposite Tanner Syftestad was named First-Team All MPSF, Honorable Mention All-American, Division II Player of the Year, and UCSD Student-Athlete of the Year.
Vogel also spent time on staff with UCLA Women’s Volleyball where the team made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. That year, UCLA placed 6 players on the Pac-12 All-Conference team including both Middle Blockers that Vogel was primarily responsible for coaching.
"Nick balances our staff out in such a beneficial way that I couldn't have asked for a better option," said Zidek. "Coming from San Diego, he brings a wealth of knowledge and volleyball experience at the highest level to the Blue Demon program. As a player that played various positions at UCLA, with the USA Men's National Team, and professionally overseas, he has seen and competed against some of the best volleyball players in the world. What makes Nick so special though is his ability to translate his competitive experience and his experience learning volleyball to young people in a way that connects and develops them. He has the experience in developing and coaching intricacies to the men's and women's game, and this experience will be paramount in getting our offensive and defensive systems performing at the highest and most creative level."
Prior to his coaching days, Vogel was a four-year starter at UCLA and still sits on the atop the record book in several categories. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally in Asia, South America, and throughout Europe while also coaching at various levels. While playing for VfB Friedrichshafen in Germany, Vogel was a German Cup Champion, Bundesliga Champion, and competed in the Final-8 round of the CEV Champions League. Vogel was also named match MVP a team record 11 times in Germany and Greek League Player of the Season in his rookie year.
Additionally, Vogel was a member of the United States’ Men’s National Team and, most notably, competed in the 2014 FIVB World Championship, the 2014 USAV Cup, and the 2011 Pan American Games.
Nick and his fiancé Anna Henscey currently reside in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago with their 2 dogs, Garcia and Mavis.
