Bill Schyman

Bill Schyman played for DePaul men's basketball from 1950-53 where he was a three-year starter for the Blue Demons. Schyman averaged double figures as a junior and senior. During his junior season, he averaged 11.5 points per game and had a 10.6 scoring average his senior season.Â
Schyman was born with a loss of hearing and was the first deaf person to be drafted into the NBA in 1953 where he was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets. Following his professional career - that included traveling with the Harlem Globetrotters as a member of the Washington Generals - he led the Deaf Olympic Team to a gold medal in 1965.

He coached at Gallaudet University and was also inducted into the USA Deaf Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978 before his induction into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.
