CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s soccer travels to Drury University and Saint Louis for their final road trip of the regular season. The Blue Demons enter this weekend’s action at 5-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in Conference USA play.
A Quick Look at the Blue Demons
Since starting the season 5-0, the Blue Demons have been winless in their last 11 matches. In that span, they have lost 10 times and recorded one tie. Last weekend, DePaul dropped a 2-1 decision at Louisville and 1-0 loss at Cincinnati.
Junior forward Christy Young leads the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She is followed by Ogonnaya Dotson-Newman with four goals and two assists. Colleen Ahearn and Kelly Kammer have scored three goals apiece through 16 matches. Courtney Hannel leads the team with three assists this season.
Checking Out the Opponents
Friday's opponent, Drury, begins the weekend of play at 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers have lost two of their last three matches. Carrie Wright leads the team with seven goals and four assists followed by Jody Palazzolo with six goals and three assists.
The Saint Louis Billikens play on Friday at Marquette before hosting DePaul on Sunday afternoon. Saint Louis is 6-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in C-USA action prior to the Marquette match. Their last two matches against East Carolina and Charlotte went to overtime with a tie against the 49ers and loss against the Pirates.
Injury Bug
Over the last two weeks, injuries have worked their way into the DePaul roster. Goalkeeper Lindsey Deason ruptured a thumb tendon and will be unable to play in goal for the remainder of the season. It is the same injury that has kept out goalkeeper Erica Keppel since the start of the season. Deason may be able to play in the field, but will have surgery on the thumb.
Midfielder Kelly Kammer suffered strained ligaments and a torn meniscus in her knee and is out 4 - 6 weeks. Christy Young suffered a concussion two weeks ago and is going to be held out of this weekend’s games at Drury and Saint Louis.
Additionally, Jen Bechtold and Erin Davren are unlikely to play this weekend. Davren suffered has a deep bruise and Bechtold has a strained quad and is day-to-day.
Last Time Out - Cincinnati 1, DePaul 0
A Cincinnati goal with just under five minutes left in the match helped the Bearcats knock off the DePaul women's soccer team last Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Blue Demons dropped to 5-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in Conference USA play.
Cincinnati had a number of scoring opportunities as they outshot the Blue Demons, 20-0. The game-winner came at 85:52 when Kelly Rigsbee took a pass from Marie Strelka and beat DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason.
Honor Roll
For the first time in the program's history, two different players have been named C-USA Player of the Week in the same season. Christy Young and Ogonnaya Dotson-Newman have earned league honors for the first two weeks of the season. Kelly Kaiser took defensive honors once in 1998 and 1997.
Dotson-Newman earned league honors after scoring a goal in the 3-1 win over Valparaiso and assisting on two scores in the 3-0 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay. For the season, the junior college transfer has scored twice to go with the two assists.
Young was the offensive player of the week after scoring twice and adding an assist in DePaul's first two wins of the season over Indiana State and Western Illinois. She has five goals and an assist in the five 2001 matches.
In addition to the league honors, senior Katie Hawkins was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for Sept. 10-16. She earned the honor after coming off the bench and scoring against IPFW.
Looking at Next Week
Following this weekend's matches against East Carolina and Charlotte, the Blue Demons go on the road for four straight games. Next weekend DePaul plays at Louisville and Cincinnati followed by trips to Drury and Saint Louis. The final match of the regular season will be at Wish Field when the Blue Demons host Marquette on Nov. 3.
