CHICAGO - After leading the Blue Demons to three straight wins last week, senior forward Lenae Williams was named Conference USA Co-Player of the Week. The sharpshooter continued her strong start to the 2001-02 campaign by averaging 28 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game against Northwestern, Loyola-Chicago and Toledo. Houston's Chandi Jones joined Williams in the league's weekly honor.
Williams started the week with 33 points in DePaul's 67-50 win over Northwestern. Against the Wildcats, she scored DePaul's first 12 points while going 10-for-10 from the free throw line with a career-high seven steals. At Loyola-Chicago on Thursday evening, the Addison, Ill., native just missed a double-double as she scored 25 points with nine rebounds and six assists. The six assists tied a career high. In the third game of the week, Williams scored nine of the Blue Demons' last 12 points in the 67-62 victory over Toledo. She finished that game with 26 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
For the season, the All-American candidate has quickly proven herself to be one of the biggest scoring threats in the country. Through seven games, the Addison, Ill., native is averaging 25.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.3 steals per contest. She has reached double-figures in all seven games and scored at least 20 points five times. She opened the season by being named the Moran Realty Classic MVP and followed that with a 41-point outburst at Iowa State in the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge. Her point total against the Cyclones was the most scored at Hilton Colesium since Jan Jensen of Drake scored 41 in 1990.
