WASHINGTON, D.C. - The DePaul women's basketball team lost, 74-61, to the George Washington Colonials at the Charles E. Smith Center on Sunday afternoon. The defeat snapped the Blue Demons' four-game win streak and dropped their record to 6-3. Head coach Doug Bruno was unavailable for the game following surgery last Thursday.
DePaul started the game sluggishly missing their first four shots to fall behind, 4-0. The Blue Demons came back to tie the game on a layup by Jamie Smith, two of her eight first-half points, to tie the game at 8-8 with 15:34 left in the half.
The Colonial lead grew to as much as four points before a Lindsay Forsberg three-pointer cut the deficit to 17-16 with just over 11 minutes left in the period. From that point, George Washington built a 12-point lead and outscored the Blue Demons, 19-10, to take a 36-26 advantage at halftime.
After George Washington's Cathy Joens made two free throws to put the Colonials up 38-26, DePaul went on a 17-10 run and cut the lead to 48-43 on a Lenae Williams three-pointer at 14:21. That was as close as DePaul would get as George Washington took advantage of their height and built a 16-point lead with just eight minutes remaining. The inside duo of Erica Lawrence and Oha Ugo combined for 42 points and 16 rebounds while going 12-of-14 from the free throw line.
Williams led DePaul in scoring with 13 points and a six assists while Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds. Laura Sobieszczyk chipped in 10 points while dishing out three assists. Williams' 13 points was her lowest scoring total since Feb. 25, 2001, when she tallied 12 against Saint Louis.
Bruno missed the game after undergoing a surgical procedure to remove some areas of skin cancer on his face. Doctors said the prognosis was good and all of the cancer was removed. He will be on the sideline in DePaul's next game against Purdue on Dec. 17. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the DePaul Athletic Center.
