ROSEMONT, IL – Andre Brown scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Lance Williams added 15 points and eight boards but it wasn’t enough to overcome South Florida’s Altron Jackson on Saturday at the Allstate Arena.
Jackson, a 6-6 senior, tossed in a game-high 24 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Teammate Mike Bernard added 16 points, including 14 in the second half, to propel the Bulls to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA.
DePaul, which dropped its third straight, fell to 7-7 overall and 0-3 in C-USA.
The Bulls opened the first half by running out to a nine-point lead at 16-9 and saw the lead grow to as much as 10 before going to the break with a 34-26 advantage. They opened the second half by increasing the margin to 12 at 38-26 before the Blue Demons clawed back into the contest, getting as close as two points at 40-38 with 15:25 remaining but South Florida quickly increased the lead back to nine at 54-45 with 10:53 left.
DePaul had one more run to slice the lead to three at 60-57 with 4:08 left but that is as close as the Blue Demons would get.
DePaul’s Lance Williams scored the 1,000th point of his career on Saturday, making him the 39th player in school annals to reach that milestone.
Head coach Pat Kennedy’s squad will be in action again on Wednesday when it visits 10th-ranked Cincinnati at 8 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
