DePaul Runs Past Dominican Republic

CHICAGO – Six players in double-figures and a blistering .579 first-half field goal percentage sent the women’s basketball team past the Dominican Republic National Team, 103-52, on Wednesday night at the DePaul Athletic Center. The Blue Demons wrap-up the exhibition schedule with a pair of wins heading into the season-opener at Southern Illinois on Nov. 23.
Khara Smith led all scorers with 23 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Others in double-figures for the Blue Demons included Sarah Kustok with 15, Ashley Luke with 14, Lindsay Forsberg and Charlene Smith chipped in 11 points each and Jenni Dant added 10 points. For the game, DePaul shot .474 from the field and outrebounded the foreigners, 40-29.
After a bucket by Dominican Republic’s Barbara Santos to open the game, DePaul scored 21 of the game’s next 23 points for a 21-4 lead just six minutes into the contest. The first-half advantage grew to as large as 32 points while the Blue Demons went into halftime leading, 57-25.
The second half was much like the first as the Blue Demons outscored the visitors, 46-27. A 19-6 run midway through the second stanza put the Blue Demons up, 93-42, with just under seven minutes left in the game. DePaul eclipsed the 100-point mark on a pair of free throws by Kustok at 4:55.
Andreina Paniagua led the Dominican Republic with 13 points and six rebounds while Charlenny Frias added 11 points.
DePaul opens the 2002-03 campaign on the road as they travel to Southern Illinois next weekend. Over Thanksgiving, the Blue Demons will be one of eight teams at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic. The home opener will be the Moran Realty Classic, Dec. 6-7, at the DePaul Athletic Center. DePaul welcomes Boston University, Loyola-Chicago and Montana State to Lincoln Park for the two-day tourney.
