Blue Demons Eye C-USA Championships

CHICAGO- TCU is the host and top seed for the 2002 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, which gets underway Thursday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. All 14 teams will compete in the championship, with the top two seeds earning first round byes. First, second and third places will play out completely, and there will be a tie for fifth, seventh, ninth, 11th and 13th place.
In its inaugural C-USA campaign, TCU enters the league championship ranked 26th in the nation. As the top seed, the Horned Frogs will meet the winner of the first round match between eighth-seeded Cincinnati and ninth-seeded Memphis Friday at 12 p.m. TCU has two of the nation's top doubles tandems with Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez (20th) and Saber Pierce and Leoni Weirich (47th). Aburto is also ranked 112th in singles.
DePaul is ranked 75th nationally and is the second seed in the Conference USA Championship. This marks the highest billing that the Blue Demons have had for a C-USA championship, as DePaul won all five of its matches against league competition this spring. DePaul will meet the winner of the first round match between seventh-seeded UAB and 10th-seeded Louisville Friday at 9 a.m. UAB's Femke de Boer and Monika Schmid are ranked 57th in the nation in doubles.
For the sixth straight season, Marquette has earned a top four seed at the Conference USA Championship. The Golden Eagles are the third seed this week and meet 14th-seeded Southern Miss Thursday at 12 p.m. The winner of that match faces the winner of Thursday's 3 p.m. first round match between sixth-seeded South Florida and 11th-seeded Saint Louis. That second round contest is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.
Sarah Borwell, who is ranked 21st in the nation in singles, leads fourth-seeded Houston against 13th-seed Charlotte Thursday at 12 p.m. The winner of that match faces either fifth-seeded Tulane or 12th-seeded East Carolina Friday at 12 p.m. The 56th-ranked Green Wave and Pirates play Thursday at 3 p.m. Tulane's Julie Morris, one of three Green Wave players to earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors this season, is 83rd in the nation in singles.
