CHICAGO - DePaul University's Lenae Williams will continue her basketball career in the WNBA as the Detroit Shock selected her in the second round with the 18th overall pick. Williams becomes the fourth Blue Demon to play in the WNBA and is the highest-picked DePaul player in the league's draft.
The Shock opened their draft day by taking Connecticut's Swin Cash with the second overall pick. Williams was the first of four second round picks for Detroit and was followed by Louisiana Tech's Ayana Walker at No. 20, Indiana's Jill Chapman at No. 21 and Kathy Wambe from Belgium at No. 22.
Detroit head coach Greg Williams felt very fortunate to land Williams early in the second round. "We hoped someone that we really wanted would fall to No. 18," said Williams. "We were really high on her. She can stretch the defense with her range and is versatile so she can play the second guard spot as well."
Detroit was the WNBA's youngest team last season while posting a record of 10-22. Entering their sixth season in the league, they open training camp on April 29 at the Palace of Auburn Hills practice facility in suburban Detroit. The three-game preseason schedule opens May 13 against the Houston Comets and the regular season starts on May 30 at the Orlando Miracle.
