Blue Demons Travel to Champaign

CHICAGO – The DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams head south to compete in the Illini Challenge on Saturday morning. The men’s 8k race starts at 9:45 a.m. and is followed by the 5k women’s race at 10:30 a.m.
The Illini Challenge serves as the final competition before the Conference USA Championships for the Blue Demons. The University of South Florida will be the host of the league race and it takes place in Tampa, Fla. on Nov. 1.
At the Sean Earl Invitational on Oct. 5, the men’s team took third while the women’s squad was 14th. Dave Webb led the men’s team with a ninth-place finish out of 514 collegiate runners from various divisions. His time of 24:49 was followed by Donnie Warner in 16th place at 25:05 in the 8k event. The Blue Demons placed four runners in the top 50 with Anthony Becknek in 41st and Richard Byrne in 46th place. Aaron Rowe of Edinboro University won the race in 24:07. Host Loyola-Chicago took the team title followed by the Universal Sole/adidas team and DePaul.
On the women’s side, Marlene Key was the top finisher in 49th out of 560 competitors in the 5k race. Key completed the course in a time of 18:46 and was followed by Carrie Moffett in 70th place at 19:01. Hilary Edmondson of Wisconsin won the women’s race at 17:18. The Badgers won the team title and was followed by Nebraska and Purdue.
