Blue Demons Douse the Flames

CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s basketball team improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 1985-86 season with a 106-60 win over Illinois-Chicago on Friday night at the UIC Pavilion. The Blue Demons scored 56 in the first half and came back with 50 in the second half.
The visiting Blue Demons jumped out to a 15-10 lead behind six points from Khara Smith in the first four minutes. Both teams started out blazing from the field as DePaul (7-0) hit six-of-seven shots while the Flames knocked down all five of their attempts.
Jenna Rubino’s three at
Khara Smith found Jenni Dant on a breakaway lay-up to put DePaul ahead, 38-18, with just over seven minutes left in the first half. On the next Blue Demons possession, Ashley Luke hit her first three-pointer of the night.
Back-to-back three’s by Luke put the Blue Demons up 52-25 – marking the fourth time this season that DePaul has scored at least 50 points in a half. At the break DePaul led the Flames, 56-28, while shooting a combined .488 from the field. The club came back and scored 50 in the second stanza for their fifth 50-plus half in seven games.
After failing to reach the century mark at
DePaul finished the game with a combined .488 field goal percentage. The visitors took advantage of 32 Illinois-Chicago turnovers, converting those into 43 points. Dant and Charlene Smith led four players in double-figures with 19 points each. Khara Smith added 14 points and 11 boards for her fifth double-double of the year and Luke chipped in 15 points on five three-pointers.
The win for DePaul was 29th straight against the Flames and 31st in the last 32 meetings. The Blue Demons have not lost to their neighborhood foe since
