CHICAGO – Five of DePaul’s 14 varsity athletic programs were recognized recently for having the highest team grade point average among the league’s 14 members. The women’s tennis team led the way with a cumulative GPA of 3.68, the highest of any team in Conference USA. Other DePaul teams with a league-best GPA include men’s soccer, men’s cross country, men’s track and field, and women’s track and field.
“This is an outstanding accomplishment by our student-athletes,” said athletics director Jean Lenti Ponsetto. “It caps an excellent year for DePaul athletics both in competition and in the classroom.”
DePaul and Saint Louis led all C-USA schools with five teams each on the Sport Academic Award list. The Billikens tallied the highest the GPA of 3.24 and were awarded the Institutional Excellence Award for the 2002-03 academic year. The Blue Demons turned in an overall GPA of 3.123, the highest in the athletic department’s history.
Nearly 60 percent of DePaul's student-athletes were recognized earlier by Conference USA for outstanding academic achievement. A total of 100 student-athletes were on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll while 15 achieved status for the league Academic Medal.
