Marquette Rallies Past Men's Basketball

MILWAUKEE – Marquette rallied to post a 70-62 victory over DePaul on Saturday at the Bradley Center.

DePaul, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped, fell to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles moved to 12-5 and 3-3.

Head Coach Dave Leitao’s squad was led by Milwaukee native Quemont Greer who scored 20 points on 10-15 shooting. Fon du Lac, Wis. native Drake Diener and freshman Sammy Mejia each had 12 for DePaul. Leading scorer Delonte Holland, who came in averaging 18.9 points per game, had just seven on 3-of-11 shooting after suffering an apparent ankle injury midway through the first half. He returned soon after.

Marquette was led by Dameon Mason’s game-high 21 points.

The Blue Demons came out of the first half on fire by making 15 of their first 20 shots to go up by as many as 12 points, 35-23, late in the first half. The Golden Eagles were able to claw back into the contest and DePaul’s lead at intermission was one (37-36).

DePaul shot .615 (16-26) in the first half.

The second half was nip and tuck for the first 11-plus minutes before Mason gave Marquette a 51-49 lead with four straight points, including a steal and fast-break slam dunk with 8:22 remaining. Marquette went up five, 56-51, with Travis Diener's long 3-pointer from the right wing with about 4:30 left. Two Mason free throws made it 58-51 less than a minute later.

DePaul got no closer than four the rest of the way. Marquette made seven free throws in the final 37 seconds to seal it.

At one point, DePaul outscored Marquette 29-10 before the Golden Eagles cut the lead to just one, 37-36, at the half.

DePaul is off until Saturday when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina at 6 p.m. (WSCR 670 AM).

Notes

WIth his four 3pt. field goals, Drake Diener became the 10^th player in DePaul history to make 100 3pt. field goals in a career and is now ninth in school history with 102… leading rebounder Andre Brown, who has missed the past eight games, dressed but did not see action.
