ST. LOUIS – Top-seeded Saint Louis proved to be too much on their home field as they defeated the women’s soccer team, 3-1, in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament. Goalkeeper Lindsey Deason scored for the second straight game as DePaul ended their season with a 9-9-2 overall record.
The Billikens scored early when Cassi Winchell dropped in a shot past Deason just under three minutes into the match. Her goal at 2:56 was assisted by Courtney Hulcer.
As she did last Friday at UAB, Deason lined up a deep free kick and found the back of the net. This time it was a 40-yarder that banged off the crossbar and tied the match at 18:19.
Saint Louis (14-5-1) took the lead for good when Hulcer found Dee Guempel for a six-yarder at the left post. Guempel’s eventual game-winner came with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.
The Billikens added a second-half insurance goal when Maureen Hughes converted a penalty kick at 64:30.
Saint Louis outshot DePaul, 18-7, while Deason finished with six saves. The Billikens also held a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
DePaul wraps up the 2004 season by rewriting the recordbooks. Among the records set this season were team points, goal and assists. Individually, Erin Walter set the single-season assist record while five players finished the season with at least 15 points for the first time in school history.
The program closes the books on Conference USA play as the Blue Demons enter the BIG EAST Conference next year. The 2005 season will also be the 10th year of women's soccer at DePaul University as a varsity program.
