CHICAGO - DePaul University women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno announced today that Sarah Kustok has joined the program as an assistant coach. Kustok, who played at DePaul from 2000-04, fills in the vacated position left by Maggie Dixon. Dixon accepted the head coaching position at Army on Oct. 5, 2005.
“As a player, Sarah Kustok was one of the best captains and hardest workers in DePaul women’s basketball history,” said Bruno. “Sarah’s willingness to jump into the coaching world is a huge bonus for our program. Sarah knows the players and coaching staff as well as the manner in which the DePaul program works, teaches and succeeds. Sarah Kustok’s tireless work ethic has already been a benefit to our program. While Sarah will be new to the recruiting game, her reputation and contacts in the Chicago and Illinois high school basketball world, together with her personality and work ethic will make her a recruiting natural.”
Kustok helped lead the Blue Demons to four post season appearances, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths in 2003 and 2004. One of the program’s top three-point shooters, she finished her career ranked among all-time leaders in three-pointers, three-point field goal attempts and three-point field goal percentage. The Orland Park native is currently ranked fourth all-time with a .388 three-point field goal percentage, seventh with 148 three-pointers and seventh with 381 three-point field goal attempts. Her .445 (49-100) three-point percentage as a junior ranks third on DePaul’s single-season chart.
“DePaul University is a place filled with individuals who have a passion for excellence. I am thrilled at the opportunity to return to a program I hold so much respect for because of the level of commitment and dedication that comes from all who are involved,” said Kustok. “Coach Bruno’s competitiveness and energy sets a standard that constantly makes those around him strive to achieve their maximum potential in all areas of academics, athletics and life. The talents, attitudes and sheer desire of this group of young women make me feel honored to be a part of their growth as players and as people.”
Following her playing career, Kustok handled the color commentary duties for DePaul radio broadcasts and worked with ESPN on their college football productions. She received her Masters degree in Multi Cultural and Corporate Communication from DePaul in 2005.
