Women's Soccer Falls at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The DePaul women’s soccer team opened their BIG EAST weekend with a 2-1 loss at Providence on Friday afternoon. The Friars scored a goal in each half before Lea Hill cut the deficit as the Blue Demons outshot Providence, 13-1, in the second period.
Jill Camburn scored both goals for Providence (4-5-5, 1-5-2 BIG EAST) with the first coming in the 14th minute. Kelly Pettersen and Victories Neff set up the play that finished with Camburn’s third goal of the season at 13:36.
DePaul (3-10-2, 0-7-1 BIG EAST) put pressure on the in the second half, but an early goal in the period proved the insurance to seal the win for the Friars. Camburn struck again at 47:59 with a header off a cross from Chrisite Gent. The Blue Demons took 13 shots alone in the second half while outshooting Providence, 18-7 in the match.
The Blue Demons finally broke through as Hill’s third goal of the season made the score 2-1 with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Katie Kiene served the ball into the box on a corner kick and Hill headed it to the back of the net at 81:40. DePaul took four corner kicks in the match, all in the second half, while Providence was able to generate three corner kick opportunities.
DePaul concludes the weekend with a Sunday afternoon match at Connecticut. Kickoff at Marrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn., is set for 1 p.m. EST. The regular season concludes next weekend as the Blue Demons travel to Georgetown and Villanova.
Match Notes: Lea Hill’s goal made her the third player in school history with 40 career points… she joins Lauren Spacht and Julianne Sitch… Hill is now tied with Spacht for second all-time with 15 career goals… the nine-match winless streak is the longest since an 11-game run during the 2001 season… the series with Providence is now tied a 1-1-0.
